Mycobacterium tuberculosis Drug Resistance, Ghana

چکیده
1170 Emerging Infectious Diseases • www.cdc.gov/eid • Vol. 12, No. 7, July 2006 Several infection risk factors exist simultaneously in this situation. In a CL-endemic area, immigrant populations, who are mostly nonimmune, exert pressure on the environment (deforestation) that directly increases their risk for exposure to infected vectors, in the absence of prophylactic measures. The initial short-term effect of deforestation is the mobilization of aggressive adult sandflies, which have been disturbed while resting. However, the ability of zoophilic vectors to adapt to peridomestic environments has also already greatly influenced the distribution of leishmaniases in South America (5–7). Considering the uncertainty of the population estimate, turnover, and immunity status, we assume that incidence rates should be considered cautiously. Nevertheless, we found that gold mining in forested areas constitutes a risk factor for CL, at least in French Guiana and probably in all Amazonian rainforests. This risk could be a public health concern. Larger studies in other gold-mining areas are required to quantify the incidence of CL among workers to effectively focus prophylactic and preventive campaigns.

Genotyping and drug susceptibility testing of mycobacterial isolates from population-based tuberculosis prevalence survey in Ghana
BACKGROUND Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and Non-tuberculosis Mycobacterium (NTM) infections differ clinically, making rapid identification and drug susceptibility testing (DST) very critical for infection control and drug therapy. This study aims to use World Health Organization (WHO) approved line probe assay (LPA) to differentiate mycobacterial isolates obtained from tuberculosis...
متن کاملEvaluation of Gene Mutations Involved in Drug Resistance in Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Strains Derived from Tuberculosis Patients in Mazandaran, Iran, 2013
Drug resistance (especially multiple drug resistance) in Mycobacterium tuberculosis makes global concerns in treatment and control of tuberculosis. Rapid diagnosis of drug resistant strains of the bacteria has vital importance in the prognosis of the disease. The aim of this study was to identify the mutations responsible for drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains derived from pa...
متن کاملA STUDY OF MYCOBACTERIUM TUBERCULOSIS DRUG RESISTANCE IN PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS
Tuberculosis remains a major public health problem in both developing and developed countries. Drug-resistant tuberculosis is an increasing health problem and serious challenge to tuberculosis (TB) control programs. Information about the susceptibility pattern of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates against anti-tuberculosis drugs is an important aspect to TB control. The objectives of the s...
متن کاملDetection and characterization of drug-resistant conferring genes in Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains: A prospective study in two distant regions of Ghana
We spoligotyped and screened 1490 clinical Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains from Northern and Greater Accra regions of Ghana against INH and RIF using the microplate alamar blue phenotypic assay. Specific drug resistance associated genetic elements of drug resistant strains were analyzed for mutations. A total of 111 (7.5%), 10 (0.7%) and 40 (2.6%) were mono-resistant to INH, RIF, and...
متن کاملFirst Susceptibility Testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for Second-line Anti-tuberculosis Drugs in Ghana
We performed drug susceptibility testing on first- and second-line drugs in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) for the first time in Ghana to obtain preliminary data on drug-resistant tuberculosis. Of 21 isolates (4 new cases and 17 treated cases), 5 (23.8%) were multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and 19 (90.5%) were resistant to at least one drug, but no extensively drug-resi...
متن کاملGenotypic Diversity and Drug Susceptibility Patterns among M. tuberculosis Complex Isolates from South-Western Ghana
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to use spoligotyping and large sequence polymorphism (LSP) to study the population structure of M. tuberculosis complex (MTBC) isolates. METHODS MTBC isolates were identified using standard biochemical procedures, IS6110 PCR, and large sequence polymorphisms. Isolates were further typed using spoligotyping, and the phenotypic drug susceptibility patterns we...
